Over the coming days we will preview the 42nd TD Bank Reedy River Run. Today we have six questions for Greenville's Esther Atkins, who will be among our "elite" field. Ester is the defending champion for the 10K and ran 35:27 last year. She is a former USATF National Champion in the marathon and a three-time qualifier for the USA Olympic Team Marathon Trials. She represented the USA in the marathon at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China.
How many years have you been running and why did you start?
I've been running for over 15 years. I started running because I had gained a lot of weight living abroad my junior year of high school and wanted to lose it before I came home. But I quickly fell in love with running and my goals changed.
What is your favorite running experience?
Running the 2014 Boston Marathon was truly amazing due to the fact that it was the year after the bombing.
Where is your favorite venue to run locally?
I practically live on the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
Have you run TD Bank Reedy River Run previously?
Yes, in 2011 and 2018.
What is your favorite part of the course?
I'm excited for how beautiful the Cleveland Park section will be this year after all of the improvements that the city has made on the Reedy River!
Why are your running the TD Bank Reedy River Run?
Because it's a great local race and hopefully it'll be perfect timing for my comeback from some nagging injuries.
