Over the coming days we will preview the 42nd TD Bank Reedy River Run. Today we have six questions for Boudler, Colorado's Benji Durden who will return to Greenville to celebrate his victory in the initial Reedy River Run. Benji made the 1980 USA Olympic Team in the marathon and also represented the USA in the same event in the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. He has a personal best of 2:09:58 for the distance, when he placed third in the 1983 Boston Marathon.
How many years have you been running and why did you start?
I began running track in 1964 in Jr. High to be part of a competitive sport which, as a nerd, I thought would make me more acceptable to my classmates.
What is your favorite running experience?
Making the 1980 US Olympic Marathon Team.
Where is your favorite venue to run locally?
It has been a while, but I liked running around the Furman campus back in the 70s & 80s.
Have you run TD Bank Reedy River Run previously?
Yes, back at the beginning of the race.
What is your favorite part of the course?
It has been too long since I have been on the course to really remember it clearly, but there was a section along the river under the trees that was nice.
Why are your running the TD Bank Reedy River Run?
In 1978 in the 1st Reedy River Run I tied with Bob Varsha and decided it was time to come back to revisit the race: 1978 Benji Durden, 26, Stone Mountain, GA, 30.29-Bob Varsha, 26, Atlanta, GA, 30.29
